Moving to a new home is an exciting time, and the prospect of starting fresh in a new place can be invigorating. However, with all the work that comes with packing up your house and moving your belongings, it’s easy to forget about some important steps you need to take before actually moving day arrives.

In order to make sure that nothing goes wrong on move-in day (or worse – in transit.), here are some things you should do at least two weeks before your move.

1) Clean out closets or rooms you won’t be using anymore

If you’re not going to need that guest bedroom or home office anymore, it’s time to start packing up those items and getting them ready to go. The less stuff you have to move, the easier it will be – and the less likely you are to forget something important.

You can donate, sell, or give away any unwanted items in a garage sale or online – just be sure to do it well before the move so you don’t have to worry about it on moving day.

2) Notify your bank and credit card companies of your new address

One of the most important things you can do before moving is making sure that all of your important documents – like bank statements and credit card bills – are sent to your new address.

If you don’t notify your bank and credit card companies of your change of address, there’s a good chance they’ll end up sending all of those important papers to your old house. And if you’re not living there anymore, that could lead to some serious problems.

3) Make copies of important documents and store them somewhere safe

One thing that can really throw a wrench into your move is losing your important documents – like your birth certificate or passport.

To avoid this, make copies of all of your important documents and store them in a safe place. That way, if something happens to the originals, you’ll still have them.

4) Pack a go-bag with essentials for when you first get to your new home

When you’re finally done moving all of your belongings into your new house and taking care of all the last-minute details, the last thing you want to do is unpack.

Instead, pack a go-bag with essentials like toiletry items, a change of clothes, and some snacks so you can just grab it and go when you get to your new home. That way, you’ll at least have something to help you get through the first few days without having to deal with boxes and unpacking.

5) Label all of your boxes

This may seem like a no-brainer, but it’s easy to forget to label your boxes – and then you’re in for a lot of guesswork when it comes to unpacking.

Make sure to label each box with its contents, as well as which room it should go in once you get to your new home. That way, you’ll be able to unpack quickly and easily – without having to search through every single box for that one thing you need.

6) Hire movers

If you’re not comfortable with moving all of your belongings yourself, or if you have a lot of stuff, it might be worth looking into companies like 2 Men Removals to help you out.

Just be sure to book them well in advance, so they can fit you into their schedule. And be prepared to pay a bit more – movers can be expensive, but it’s definitely worth it to have someone else do all the heavy lifting for you.

7) Clean the new and old home

One of the last things you want to do when moving is clean both your old and new homes

But it’s definitely something you should do, especially if you’re moving in right before or after a big holiday like Christmas or Thanksgiving. That way, you won’t have to worry about cleaning when you’re already stressed out from the move.

Conclusion

These are just a few of the things you should do before your move – but there are definitely others, so be sure to do your own research and come up with a plan that’s tailored to your specific needs. By preparing ahead of time, you’ll make the move much easier on yourself – and you’ll be able to relax and enjoy your new home.
