Low strength
Pressboard furniture is very weak as compared to other types of specially designed woods, like plywood. It is not thick and may get damaged easily if not handled with care. So, if you are someone who has to change houses quite frequently, make a note that pressboard furniture may not withstand the transportation process successfully and you could end up losing your hard earned money.
Less Life
By reading the above point, you must have come to know that not only is it low on strength, but is also prone to damage because of humidity and moisture present in air. This is another disadvantage that puts pressboard furniture to dislike.
If you are lucky, you may get an honest opinion from a salesman or shopkeeper informing you that the piece of pressboard furniture you are about to buy will last only for two to three years (some say that their life period is for five years). Now that you know this, compare it with plywood, which will last for around good 15 to 20 years, or some solid wood furniture which will last for decades and you may even be able to pass it to your next generation.
Not able to take heavy loads
Pressboard should never be used at places where a heavy load is subjected on them. As their strength is low, it is capable of taking only light load, such as being used to form a wall of cabinet. If you take the risk of putting heavy load on it, then chances are the pressboard furniture may break and the heavy load might end up injuring you, your furniture or your designer radiator if kept next to it.
Not eco friendly
As mentioned above, pressboard is made up of different types of woods and small pieces glued and heated together to form a sheet. The glue used in this process is plastic resin (Phenolic Resin), the same one that’s used in the creation of attractive laminates. This is where it fails, since it is not eco friendly as solid wood furniture, which is 100% natural and of good quality.
